Zorra Township is looking to get ahead of the game when it comes to renewable energy.
ZORRA - Zorra Township has passed a motion asking staff to see if the township can achieve the 2050 sustainability initiative 10 years sooner.
Councillor Marcus Ryan put forth the motion to see if Zorra Township can become 100 percent reliant on renewable energy before the 2050 goal set out by Oxford County. Ryan tells Heart FM why he thinks this is something that Zorra can accomplish.
"Zorra Township is a small township and sometimes that is a disadvantage and sometimes that can be an advantage, so I talked to staff about this and it was decided that we can develop a plan to do this and one of the advantages of having a small township is we may be able to do it better and faster than anyone else."
Ryan notes staff has been directed to come up with a plan that will look at the current energy sources they are using in Zorra Township.
"One of the main areas to look at is all of the facilities the township owns, so some of the biggest ones there would be arenas, public buildings, those kind of things that are heated right now by natural gas, propane and in some cases even oil."
Ryan says he has been living with renewable energy at his own place for quite some time now and was really excited when the 2050 initiative was first brought to the table.
"First of all I would like to say this is something I have wanted to do for a long time and I didn't think the opportunity to do it would come so early in this term of council and when Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch brought his resolution to Oxford County council I was really inspired by the strong support show to the initiative."
