Oxford County is going to consider the possibility of becoming a zero waste community by 2025.
Deputy Warden Ted Comiskey will give a notice of a motion he intends to bring forward on September 9th at council on Wednesday. As a zero waste community 100% of Oxford's generated and non hazardous industrial, commercial, institutional and residential sold waste disposal needs would be met by the Oxford Waste Management facility at Salford. Basically it means we wouldn't ship any of our waste outside the County and definitive actions would be take to reduce solid waste generation and increase waste diversion. Comiskey tells Heart FM he believes this is the direction we need to take as County and says he thinks we are more than capable of achieving this goal.
"What is the reason for even residential to still have only 1/3 of waste in the garbage bags every week, their is still recyclables in there, I think it's education it's awareness it's getting that drive to say hey we need to do something about this."
Comiskey says right now our landfill at Salford will be full by 2055 however if we approve this motion it mean less waste go to the dump and allowing to be useful until the year 2100.
"Zero waste kind of says, ok we are going to handle all of the waste produced by industrial, commercial, institutional and residential, we are going to process it all in Oxford County, but that's not where it ends."
