The potato drive will support the Food Rescue Hub this Saturday.

WOODSTOCK - The Great Potato Giveback is back for another year in the Friendly City.

It will be taking place at the Woodstock Zehrs this Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m..

Chris Bracey says they will be selling 10lb bags of potatoes for $2.

"If people want to drop in, they will be able to buy a bag of potatoes right outside if they don't want to come into the store, and the customer can choose to buy it and keep it or buy it and donate it. Every bag that we sell that day, we're also going to donate $1."

Katlyn Mechanical will also donate an additional $1 for each bag, up to $2,000.

The event will also include a Lions Club barbeque, fun kids, games, and a potato soup contest.

The Woodstock Zehrs sold over 2,100 potatoes during the Great Potato Giveback last year, and over 800 potatoes were donated to Operating Sharing.

This year's event will support the Food Rescue Hub. Allison Henkell is one of the board members for the hub, and she says it will store food for agencies in need.

"There will be freezers, fridges and storage so we can take large amounts of food and various organizations can get just what they need, so we don't have large amounts of waste from there either."

The hub will be located on Winniett Street and if all goes as planned in terms of renovations, Henkel says the hub could open at the end of September. Volunteers will be needed once it opens, those who are interested can e-mail info@foodrescuehub.ca for more information.

Chris Bracey and Allison Henkell stopped by the Heart FM studio to chat with Liz and Marcie on Monday, August 24th. You can listen to the full interview below:
