The Red Cross and the Trillium Foundation are teaming up to provide free first aid training to young farmers
OXFORD COUNTY - Young farmers are being given first aid training thanks to the Canadian Red Cross and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
First Aid Coordinator Kelly Farrell says 4H students will be learning important life saving skills today. "The Ontario Trillium Foundation has given us funding to train 150 participants across Thames Valley. The students have all been selected and they met the criteria within the grant saying they must be related to a small family farm. They have also given funding to give 12 participants the First Aid instructor course so this training can continue on long after we're gone."
These skills are important for anyone working on a farm to know, because these areas can be very dangerous according the Farrell. "Each participant learns to identify hazards that can prevent injuries, gain the knowledge that it takes to recognize an emergency, the confidence to act upon the emergency, and the skills to deliver the necessary treatment. So the end goal is to lessen the injuries on farms."
Although Farrell went in expecting to only be teaching the course, she says she has also learned a lot from the students. "I've learned a lot from them and their ability to recognize the hazards that they're dealing with - and they're excited that they now have the skills to make the correction to those hazards. And we're a big agriculture community here and it's important that everyone have these skills."
