Habitat for Humanity has launched their Meaning of Home writing contest. The annual event has students write a poem or essay on what home means to them.
OXFORD - This year’s Meaning of Home contest from Habitat for Humanity has launched.
The annual writing contest for students across Canada in grades 4, 5 and 6 started last Monday and will run to February 21st
This year the Students will be writing a poem or essay on what home means to them, the works can be anywhere from 50 to 300 words long.
Senior Associate for Community Engagement for Habitat of Humanity Amber Flight explains why the event means so much to both the Habitat and the children.
"They get to learn all about the importance of home, they get to be apart of the community and something bigger. If they do it in a group setting it's a great interactive way for students to engage in the different topics, the great thing about this is the prizes, each entry results in a $10 donation and the donation goes to the local habitat, and the winner of each grade they get to direct a $30,000 to the local habitat belt the grand prize winners also receive an iPad and a pizza party for their class. We're also going to have 9 runner ups three per grade, they also get to direct a $10,000 grant to the local habitat belt and they also receive an electronic tablet and a class pizza party."
The Meaning of Home contest was created in 2007 by Genworth Canada and since then has raised over $1.5 million dollars to help build affordable and livable housing in communities across Canada.
Last year, over 8,000 submissions were received from students from across Canada, this year they are hoping for a record-breaking 10,000 submissions.
