The CMHA is recognizing World Suicide Prevention Day with an event at Southside Park to encourage everyone to talk openly about suicide.
WOODSTOCK - Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and the Canadian Mental Health Association is hosting an event to get people talking about the sensitive subject.
They will be at the Southside Park from 12-2 p.m for a BBQ and Reaching Out Event. Suicide is a complex issue and is often preventable through caring, compassion, commitment, and community. Community Engagement and Volunteer Development Coordinator Kathleen Campbell-Conlon says we need to discuss suicide.
"Because a lot of the reason people don't talk about it is the stigma surrounding it. Statistics show that roughly 4 000 people in Canada commit suicide, impacting about 2.8 million people, and that's annually."
This year World Suicide Prevention Day’s theme is Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives. Campbell-Conlon says they do want people to know that resources are available locally for anyone suffering through depression or suicidal thoughts.
"Locally we have the Canadian Mental Health Association, we run a 24 hour a day crisis line so you can contact our crisis number and we will have a real person available to help you. The crisis number is 1-877-339-8342."
The BBQ does cost $3 dollars and that will include a hamburger or a hotdog and a drink. They will also have a drumming session with the Woodstock General Hospital. They also have a social media activity with the Woodstock and Area Community Health Centre, and we will be doing a butterfly releases at 1:30 p.m. as a sign of new life and in memory of those we have lost to suicide.
