Woodstock Parks and Recreation are replacing heavy steel framed soccer nets with lighter aluminum nets.
WOODSTOCK- A 15 year old girl died this week after a movable metal soccer net fell on her. Woodstock Parks and Recreation department are in the process of replacing heavy steel soccer nets with aluminum versions. The current city owned soccer nets are move-able and require several people to lift them. Anchors are used to keep them in place.
This year the Parks and Recreation department is making some changes to the type of soccer net frames they are using.
"This year the parks department is upgrading the fields, you may notice that lower complex soccer fields have new pvo aluminum frames they are a lighter material and its got the same kind of attachement to the ground to prevent the nets from flipping over," said Woodstock Parks and Recreation supervisor Chris Kern.
Although parks and recreation maintains the fields and checks the nets anchors once a month they do come loose when children hang from the crossbars.
"People that are using the sports fields, specifically the soccer fields should not try to climb the mesh nets, and try and hang off the top crossbar its very dangerous to do that, because if it breaks loose from the crank in the ground it could do some serious damage to the public," Kern said.
"They do come loose because people do pull on them, but we try and do a full inspection every month to ensure the safety of the public."
The new nets have a special mesh netting. When a child attempts to climb the mesh it will tear away from the frame.
Anchors to the nets do come loose because of wear and tear and Kern encourages anyone who notices a loose anchor to notify the Parks and Recreation department at 519-539-1291 ext. 4101
