WOODSTOCK - An expansion of Strong Mayor powers has been announced by the Provincial Government.
This is going to include the City of Woodstock as it is projected that the "Friendly City" will have over 50,000 people by 2031.
Mayor of Woodstock, Jerry Acchione says that Council is still trying to get a grasp as to how this will affect the City.
"We have a lot of work ahead of us to understand what exactly this means for the City of Woodstock. So far, my understanding at this point is 21 municipalities including the City of Woodstock will be eligible for Strong Mayor powers, provided they are committing to meeting the provincial housing targets.
Acchione speaks to the goal is from the province.
"Right now we've got 5,500. That has been given to us as our target to reach by 2031."
Also announced, is the Building Faster Fund, which is a $1.2-billion program that will be available to the municipalities that are on track to meet their housing targets.
Acchione says that Council has been clear in demonstrating a commitment to increasing the housing stock in the city.
"With already what we have done here and kind of approved our plans of subdivisions, we are just going to continue on with that. We will make sure that we ensure families have the range of safe and affordable housing options that meet their family needs for the future."
Premier Doug Ford made both announcements at the AMO Conference in London yesterday.
