Woodstock Council Considers 2017 Budget

A proposed budget for 2017 includes work at the community complex, expanding the Parkinson Fire Hall, and more.

WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council has looked over a potential capital budget for 2017. 

Councillors discussed aspects of the proposed $22,254,000 budget with city staff Tuesday evening.

According to Mayor Trevor Birtch, if this budget is passed a lot of services in the city will be updated next year.

"A lot of these projects are about state of good repair on some of our existing facilities such as the Community Complex, a roof for the museum, as well as replacements within our fleet and new reconstruction projects on our existing roads."

The proposed budget includes a $350,000 roof replacement at the museum, spending $1.3 million on a new refrigeration unit for the Community Complex and a $2 million expansion of the Parkinson Street Fire Hall.

The budget also includes a big streetlight replacement project, which will replace all of the lights in the city with more energy efficient LED lights.

CAO David Creery tells Heart FM if the budget is passed all of the lights in the city could be replaced before the end of next year.

"Spending about $2.5 million is what we're planning in 2017 to accelerate the streetlight replacement, potentially doing three years of replacement work in one year."

The city has also applied for $1.7 million in funding from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund to help this project.

Council will discuss the proposed capital budget once again at their upcoming meeting on December 15th. They will be able to make motions to change certain aspects of the budget during the meeting before they officially approve it for 2017.
