A Woodstock company will be featured on CBC's "Dragons' Den" Wednesday night.
Modern Waste Products will be pitching their "BinPak" Compactor to the dragons.
It's a trash compactor for businesses that is about the same size as waste bin, but it compacts the garbage you put in it, allowing for 6-times more trash to be thrown in before it has to be emptied.
Business Development Director Lee Cunningham tells Heart FM Company President Mark Hanson pitched the idea, hoping to leverage some investment. It was quite a process for the company to appear on the show, which actually began last January. Hanson pitched the BinPak at an open casting in Waterloo. He received a call back to audition where they went from one of 3000 business ideas down to 200 for taping, and 80 in the end were selected to be aired in this season of the show.
But as it goes with any reality show, the contestants are sworn to secrecy as to what happened during their taping. But Cunningham was able to tell us it wasn't as intimidating as expected. "Mark was doing the pitch and he felt very relaxed. He said it's very interesting that when he came out they've changed the set. He said you just see the Dragons, you don't see the cameras or anyone behind it, so he felt pretty at ease."
We'll find out Wednesday night if the Dragons will invest in the idea to help it grow. The company is already in a state of growth having just opened a sales office in Chicago, as they look to break into major US markets.
Cunningham is inviting those interested, or fans of the show to a viewing party tomorrow night. "We thought we'd work together with Megan (Porter) at Boston Pizza, they have one of our units, they've had it for a couple of years and it works well for them. So I talked to her about doing a screening night. So we're saying 7 o'clock come by, and at 8 o'clock the show airs. We'll have some appetizers and some paraphernalia there for everybody to see and answer any questions."
