The 2014 operating budget comes in at a decrease, but is there more than meets the eye?
The budget for Woodingford Lodge in 2014 is coming in at a surprising $500,000 decrease.
It sounds like good news, but is there more to it than meets the eye?
Woodstock's Mayor thinks so. Pat Sobeski questioned County Staff why he is seeing $1.2-million is being spent on the budget from reserve funds. "It appears in my view that you're taking reserve money and using it for operations which is a mortal sin in good planning."
Woodingford's Administrator Corrie Fransen explains where a large chunk of the savings comes from. "We're pleased to have that, it comes from WSIB (Workplace Safety Insurance Board) not being as costly as we thought, so we were able to put that into reserves and use that for future years if necessary."
But that's not the end of the story. Sobeski's concerns prompted Corporate Services Director Lynn Buchner to disclose to council there is a confidential matter that needs to be discussed about the Woodingford budget. So expect to hear more about Woodingford's budget in the days and weeks ahead.
The other big issue still facing Woodingford's budget is on going building maintenance.
Another $250,000 is being spent this year to work on the eaves and soffits. It's part of a 4-year plan to fix building deficiencies.
