Winchester Street Public School Students honour Seniors for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
WOODSTOCK - The Oxford County Elder Abuse Network or OCEAN recognized World Elder Abuse Awareness Day at the Caressant Care in Woodstock today.
OCEAN reached out to the grade 8 class at Winchester Public School to explore the development of an intergenerational pledge supporting this year’s theme Fostering an Age of Inclusion. They showcased some of the amazing work done by the students at a special ceremony today.
Registered Nurse Karen Cassells says they were blown away by the posters created by these students.
"Winchester Street Public School, they are the stars of all of this, I reached out to the Grade 8 teacher Heather Reid. There was a big curriculum, and a big deliverable that was required in terms of key components and I turned the material over to the class, they took it and they worked with it, they came up with the ideas. The poster presentations are entirely what the Grade 8's theme from the work expected."
Cassells says the students took the project seriously.
"This grade 8 group identified that they wanted more time so they could come to the home, meet residents, get to know people and get that social interaction whether it be reading with them, writing little notes back and forth, just to have some meaningful interactions."
The posters focus on a range of topics including on why seniors matter, why seniors are so awesome and what are seniors rights, it's really about meaning and purpose. Heather Reid, a grade 8 teacher from Winchester Public School, has a grandfather that currently resides at Woodstock Caressant Care and so we felt that it would be a natural fit to host a poster presentation there.
