Company at the centre of landfill proposal is unfazed by County Council's move to block new landfill sites
Walker Environmental says a motion to look at changing Oxford County's Official Plan that would ban new landfill sites for trash coming in from outside of the County is still "hypothetical".
Walker GM Joe Lyng tells Heart FM today they'll still seek an Official Plan Amendment for their landfill if needed. "I believe they've just asked for the staff to come back with a report, then that process will work through. If there is an Official Plan Amendment process we have to amend it the way it stands right now, and if we have to amend it with any other addition or changes to it, then we would have to look at it at that time."
Lyng was asked if they would appeal any change to the County's Official Plan banning new landfill sites to the OMB. Lyng's response was, "I think that's a decision that we would have to make at that time. Right now, we don't even know what the Official Plan amendment would look like. We don't know how it would be worded...it's still pretty hypothetical."
The task at hand for Walker is trying to gain Ministry of Environment approval for the landfill. They're waiting for the Terms of Reference comment period to finish on October 30th to see if they can proceed to develop work plans and environmental studies.
Lyng says they hope to answer the public's concerns in time. "We certainly respect the interest in our proposal is very high. We understand that people have a lot of questions and concerns...we believe we've set a framework for if the Terms of Reference are approved, to answer some of those questions as we develop and implement the studies in the Environmental Assessment process."
