The VON Kids Circle Children's Bereavement Program will start at the Sakura House this summer.
VON Oxford is launching a new program to help children who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
The VON Kids Circle children's bereavement program will start in July and will run for seven weeks on Wednesday nights from 5:30 pm to 7:00 p.m. It will offer group support to children between the ages of 4 and 11 and will take place at the Sakura House. Hospice and Bereavement Coordinator Nancy Clark tells Heart FM this is a play based program where the kids will still get to have some fun.
"When we did our research we found that acknowledging feelings and really putting names to feelings for kids and supporting them as a whole, they really are an often overlooked population with many people not really understanding their need for support, I mean often hear that kids are so resilient they will be fine. This is going to be a play based program where they are able to interact with other kids their own age and play and do exercises and activities while still being able to talk about feelings and put names to feelings and really for us to be able to normalize their experience and their grief and give them an outlet to talk."
The program was made possible thanks to donations collected at the Handbags for Hospice this year which raised over $51,000 for the new program. Clark says parents can sign their kids up now.
"We are encouraging family members to reach out and register their kids as soon as possible, we do have a limit of 8 kids per group, this will be our first group and we really wanted to fall in line with the end of the school year so kids have support this summer so families have support throughout the summer and our plan is to have more of these groups throughout the year."
