Vacation Home Security

Vacation homes are susceptible to thieves especially during the off-season.

OXFORD COUNTY - During the winter, OPP say they experience an increase in the number of break-ins at vacation homes. OPP are reminding vacation home owners to ensure their homes are properly secured. Often vacation homes are left vacant during the off-season, making them ideal targets for thieves. OPP suggest removing valuables including alcohol to make unoccupied vacation homes unattractive to thieves. Other ways to ensure property is protected is to mark it by engraving. Simply engraving your license plate number onto property can help police in identifying stolen property and return it.

Residents concerned about the security of their homes can contact the OPP about getting evaluated. Programs such as the Cottage Watch Program monitor empty vacation homes. Members of Cottage Watch monitor fellow cottagers' homes during the off-season and report suspicious activity to police. OPP also conduct SafeGuard Ontario Property Review where police evaluate safety features on buildings such as windows, door hinges, locals and garage security to help residents prevent break-in's.
