Heavy rain in the forecast this weekend has prompted the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority to put out a Water Safety Message for the Long Weekend.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority has put out a water safety message for the long weekend.
Heavy rain is expected to hit the region this weekend starting Thursday night and continuing on Friday and Saturday. Friday is expected to bring 30-50 mm of rainfall in the watershed.
Ground conditions in the watershed are generally saturated, increasing the rate at which this rainfall will affect local waterways. While no significant flooding is anticipated with this event, higher flows on rivers and streams will increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas typically prone to spring flooding. River flows will remain higher than normal in the coming week, elevating the safety risk around rivers and streams throughout the watershed.
The public is encouraged to exercise extreme caution around all local waterways. Banks adjacent to rivers and creeks are very slippery and, when combined with cold, fast-moving water, pose a serious hazard. Parents are encouraged to keep their children and pets away from all watercourses.
