UTRCA now owns 685.21 acres of land at the Provincially Significant Wetland
DORCHESTER - The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority has acquired another 12.69 acres of property in the Dorchester Swamp.
UTRCA now owns 685.21 acres of land at the Provincially Significant Wetland. Manager of Lands and Facilities at the UTRCA Alex Shivas tells Heart FM why they are interested in acquiring property in the swamp.
"The importance of the swamp is for many reasons; it reduces flooding through water retention and improves water quality through filtration, protects bio diversity and provides habitat for wildlife. In addition to the water retention and water filtration, it is an area of bio diversity, it's an area of natural and scientific interest and this area as well is a Carolinian candidate site."
Dorchester Swamp is home to more than 600 species of vascular plants and is the largest habitat for breeding birds in Middlesex County. Shivas says they have been acquiring wetlands in the watershed for the past 50 years.
"The UTRCA first started acquiring property in Dorchester Swamp in the 1950's and by 1964 owned 350 acres. Since 1964, an additional 335.21 acres have been acquired. We continue to acquire properties at this Provincially Significant Wetland as they come available through donation or purchase."
