"Giving Tuesday is another way to inspire giving and unleash the power of community" - United Way Oxford Executive Director Kelly Gilson.
OXFORD COUNTY - First Black Friday, then Cyber Monday, and now Giving Tuesday.
It's Giving Tuesday today, which is a worldwide movement which encourages people to give back to their community through donations, volunteering, and support.
Here in Oxford County, United Way Oxford is participating in the movement once again. United Way provides financial support to organizations that fall under its three main pillars: From Poverty to Possibility, Building Strong Communities, and Helping Kids Be All That They Can Be.
But Executive Director Kelly Gilson says they're in need of donations in order to support those organizations.
"The requests for funding this year are more than double we have ever seen before. I think this speaks volumes to the struggles that all non-profits and charities are having in trying to find ways to fund programs and services that are funded by the community. These are not government-funded programs, these are community-funded programs and serves and they reflect the increasing needs for families and individuals across our community."
She's hoping people will give back to the community in the spirit of the holiday season.
"Our community needs United Way funding more than ever and United Way needs our community to help us deliver that funding now more than ever. Giving Tuesday is another way to inspire giving and unleash the power of community in helping a neighbour, someone in your community, in your own workplace or in your own family who needs an extra hand."
Donations can be made online here or at the United Way office on Hunter Street in Woodstock. Maglin Site Furniture is matching all leadership donors who donate $1,200 or more a year.
