In a 7-6 vote, the TVDSB Board of Trustees have voted against the return of their previously used community policing program, which had seen local officers monitoring in their schools.
TVDSB - The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) Board of Trustees have officially decided against implementing a pilot program for policing in their schools.
The decision was made on Tuesday, January 30, with the board voting 7-6 against moving forward with the project.
Chair of the Board, Beth Mai, has released a statement saying a positive learning environment, with safety as a top priority, remains a cornerstone of their approach to education.
She adds they are progressing with continued exploration and investment in alternative approaches, which includes the growth of mental health resources, the ongoing integration of restorative justice practices, and the strengthening of community partnerships.
The program was originally halted back in 2020 when trustees unanimously agreed to pause the use of school resource officers. This came largely in part due to the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement along with the controversial death of George Floyd.
Mai says, even though they won't be rolling forward with the program, they continue to value and respect the contributions of local police services in serving the community.
She adds that the TVDSB recognizes their significant role in maintaining community safety.
