The new legislation will give municipalities the power to ban handguns and it details a buy-back program on the over 1,500 makes and models of assault style weapons that are now illegal in Canada.
CANADA - The Federal Government has introduced new gun control legislation today.
It details the Government's plan to ban what the Government refers to as military-grade assault-style weapons. Nine months ago the Liberals announced plans to ban the sale and importation of over 1,500 makes and models of guns.
A two year amnesty period started in May. It will last until April 30, 2022. Today the Government announced plans to buy back any blacklisted firearm. The voluntary program will available in the coming months.
The new legislation would also give local municipalities the power to ban handguns and increase the penalties for gun smuggling and trafficking.
Trudeau says the new measures are not meant to punish law abiding citizens who own guns for hunting or sport shooting. He says the buy back program will allow gun owners to get fair compensation for their weapons.
