Trick or Treat Safety Tips

The Woodstock Police are putting out a few safety tips for kids this Halloween.

Kids will be taking to the streets for a little trick or treating, and the Woodstock Police are putting out a few safety reminders to keep your ghouls safe.

Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen says parents should double check those costumes before you head out the door. "We would suggest that you use face makeup and not masks so people can see who you are and wear a properly fitted costume because you think about safety and falls prevention and you don't want people tripping over costumes, tripping while you're crossing the street, and that kind of thing."

It's also important kids be cautious around cars and when crossing the street. "Carry flashlights. If you can wear any reflective type clothing, or sometimes you can get those armbands that are reflective so cars can see you," VanLeeuwen says.

And although parents should be going out with the younger kids, some of the older kids might not want mom and dad tagging along, but VanLeeuwen says it's still important to set up some guidelines. "If you're a bit older and you're just going out in your neighbourhood and your parents know exactly where you're going, set a plan for what time you're going to be home, be with friends, and just try to practice that kind of safety."
