Transportation Strategy for Oxford County

Finding new ways to connect local citizens with key services. That's the hope of Oxford's Social Planning Council as they set out in 2013 to undertake a Transportation Strategy. The concept was started last year by the United Way of Oxford, and early this year, Ashley Farrar with the Social Planning Council is looking to meet with local groups to find out what some of the transportation barriers are. For instance, in Woodstock, Farrar says city transit does have some shortcomings. "We have a bus system that doesn't run on Sunday's and that finishes at 6PM. For people that are getting jobs that require them to work on Sundays, or later than 6PM, it can be a challenge for them getting to and from work. And in some cases, people have turned down jobs because the cost of cab fare is too much for them first starting out." One of the goals is to develop a map, showing where the key services are in Woodstock, and developing a plan on how to get people to those services. Farrar says rural residents without transportation are struggling to get to doctors appointments and to pick up groceries. She's looking to get out early in the New Year to meet with groups in Oxford County to discuss the issue of transportation.
