The Transit Operational Review conducted by IBI Group recommends route restructuring, extending hours, and a fare increase
WOODSTOCK - One of the recommendations put forward by the IBI Group as part of their Woodstock Transit Operational Review included 6 a.m. bus starts.
Woodstock City Council accepted the Transit Operational Review conducted by IBI Group at Thursday's meeting.
Senior Associate with IBI Group Chris Prentice explained some of the recommendations they are making.
"So we're suggesting over a five year period to add 25 cents (to the fare) every year or two, ultimately getting up to three dollars down the road and that just emphasizes the value of transit and we think that with the improvements that are being proposed people won't mind paying an extra 25 cents."
The bus fare in Woodstock has not been increased in 15 years and as a result, is lower comparatively to neighbouring cities.
"The recommendations were first and foremost to restructure the route network as it exists today in two phases; phase one would be reallocating resources to better emphasize service south of Dundas to serve the important Norwich Avenue area, the Woodstock hospital and all of the shopping services down there."
The report also recommended extending bus service hours to start at 6 a.m. and end at 10 p.m. in order to accommodate those working early in the mornings.
Councillor Jerry Acchione expressed a safety concern from Woodstock bus drivers that are worried driving into the Wal-Mart plaza would be a safety hazard.
Woodstock City staff will evaluate the recommendations before ushering their own. The Transit Operational Review suggestions will be examined by staff for consideration in the 2016 budget. It's possible phase one could be implemented as early as July 2016.
