Oxford County is receiving $82,500 from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program for the Trans Canada Trail extension.
OXFORD COUNTY - Money from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program will help install a fence along the new Trans Canada Trial extension in Oxford.
The federally funded program will provide the city with $82,500 which equals out to about one third of the fencing project cost. The county will foot the bill for the remaining costs, withdrawing the money out of a county reserve fund.
Supervisor of Engineering Services Franks Gross explains why the county applied for the financial help.
"The line fencing was not part of the original trail construction project. We had intended to proceed with fencing as a separate piece of that overall project so we applied for funding through that grant program and we are fortunate enough to receive it."
Gross adds the fencing will benefit local farmers.
"Along the trail and the railway corridor some of the land owners have requested fencing for various reasons; to protect their crops, livestock and so on."
The Trans Canada Trail extension travels through Tillsonburg and Norwich Township before going into Norfolk County to connect with the Delhi Rail Trail.
