Tories Target Bail Reform for Repeat Violent Offenders

Pierre Poilievre says this isn't meant for 19 or 20 year olds who've made a mistake

The federal Conservatives are going after bail reform in Canada by introducing a private members bill making the system tougher for repeat violent offenders.

Leader Pierre Poilievre says it's a small number of people constantly being let out of jail, that are causing the national spike in crime.

"We're not talking about the young person who makes the odd mistake when they're 19 or 20, we're talking about someone who's committed 15, 20 or 30 offences, and then is arrested again for the very same reason, and released onto the street to re-offend," he says.

The conservative leader accuses the prime minister of making the bail system worse.

He points to British Columbia, where police wrote in a letter the same 40 offenders were arrested 6,000 times in one year in Vancouver.  "That's 150 arrests, per offender, per year.  If you could just take those 40 violent offenders off the street, you'd have 6,000 fewer victims of violent crime."

He adds the Liberal government is welcome to take this bill and make it law as soon as possible.

There have been increased demands by police forces nationwide for bail reform, including in Ontario where a number of police officers were killed recent months, such as in Milton and Hagersville.   Constable Greg Pierzchala was shot and killed late last year near Hagersville, police adding the accused was out on bail.
