OSPCA are offering cold weather safety tips for pet owners
With the frigid temperatures of late, the local OSPCA branch has seen an influx of calls from concerned residents over animals left out in the cold.
The agency says if it's too cold for you to be outside, chances are it's too cold for your pet.
Agent Karmel Smith tells Heart FM what can happen to animals left out in the cold. "Frost bite, very sore paws, the pads on their feet can crack open and start bleeding, their nose can get very cold and crack as well."
Smith says the winter can also bring many challenges for pets. "Keep animals away from puddles as they can have antifreeze in them, wipe your pet's paws as they come inside because they could have salt on them. Don't let your dog off leash especially during a snowstorm, they can easily lose their scent and get lost. A warm place to sleep, ensure your pet has a thick, cozy bed or blanket away from any drafts or off the cold floor,"
Smith suggests preparing an emergency pet survival kit, including food, water and warm blankets should something happen while you're out travelling.
