City Council votes to offer year round tire recycling at James Street works yard

No need to wait until May or September to recycle your old tires.

City council Thursday authorized staff to enter into an agreement with Ontario Tire Stewardship to become a registered tire collector allowing residents to drop off old tires at their works yard throughout the week. 

City Engineer Harold de Haan says the tire program will be similar to others already offered by the City.

"They bring them to our yard. They will drop the tires off outside of the bin. Public Works employees will then load them into the bin and once the bin is full the company comes, takes it, they pay us 88 cents per tire. It's not a lot of money but it's a little bit of income and that way we guarantee everything gets recycled."

de Haan says this service will accept tires on the rims, which wasn't currently the case at the Household Hazardous Waste Depots. 

The waste depot would be located at 944 James Street with tires being dropped off seven days a week during the normal yard waste hours.
