A ceremony this morning saw the Pride Flag get raised, as it is the beginning of Pride Month.
OXFORD COUNTY - It was a celebration to mark the start of Pride Month.
The Pride flag was raised at the Oxford County Administration Building this morning, as Oxford County Pride celebrates their 10th anniversary. President, Tami Murray says it is the second year each municipality in Oxford is raising the flag.
"And I think the collective is that the county itself, the community, is recognizing that we need to grow and be progressive and move forward, and I think that the fact that all of Oxford County raises flags is a demonstration of that."
Murray said over the 10 years they have hosted over 100 events, and it started with a picnic in a park that had less than 50 people. Warden, Marcus Ryan says it is great the flag is up, but there is still push back.
"There is still opposition to it, and it's only through people like Oxford County Pride members, members of the 2LGBTQIA community, who are courageous and persevere, that we are doing this and sending signals to other people who maybe aren't so courageous."
Warden Ryan adds he was happy to see the turnout for the ceremony as there were many people not apart of Oxford County Pride at the flag raising showing their support.
