The OPAL Alliance is inviting everyone to tell Walker to Take a Leap on Leap Day. They are hosting the event on the 29th, complete with live music, information and solidarity for people against a proposed landfill.
INGERSOLL - Tell Walker to take a Leap on Leap Day is an event hosted by the Oxford People Against the Landfill or OPAL Alliance.
It's happening on Saturday the 29th, Leap Day and the event will feature live music, information, solidarity and action. They will have live performances from the The McKay Family, Margo Does, Ted Comiskey, Leanne Mayer, Jim Gonder and Kiley Joe Masson.
OPAL member Phil Howard says they are hosting this event as a show of solidarity from people who do not want Walker Environmental to build a landfill just outside of Ingersoll.
"Water, which is a severely abused necessity of life is at risk and these are risks that no one should have to bear. It's all about fresh water, because Walker is proposing just a minimum standard dump liner, right near a historic river. It has been proven that all dumps leak eventually and we want to stop this disaster from happening for future generations."
Howard says the people have spoken in regards to this landfill, OPAL Alliance has already mailed 133,000 letters from residents who are opposed to the landfill.
"Toronto's garbage should be Toronto's problem and we want to have legislation giving local governments the right to decide on major projects like landfills. Ingersoll Mayor Ted Comiskey has brought on at least 145 mayors from other municipalities and they all want the right to decide whether they want a landfill or any other major project."
Every Friday OPAL Alliance members spend a half an hour at different spots in the County waving signs, opposing the landfill and they have fighting the proposed dump since 2012.
The event is happening from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm at the Ingersoll Pipe Band Hall.
