The statistics are staggering, 1 in 8 women in Canada will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The Canadian Cancer Society is encouraging everyone to participate in helping to raise awareness and much needed funds for research.
WOODSTOCK - The Oxford Canadian Cancer Society is selling pink ribbons at local grocery stores in the County. Community Fundraising Specialist Hailey Parliament says the campaign is going strong.
"My favourite thing about campaigns and it happens during our Daffodil campaign as well, it is seeing how the community can get involved. We have had our volunteers out selling our pink ribbons, we have ZEHRS and Sobeys and No Frills, who have kept the pink ribbons out to raise funds and raise awareness. If you are touched by cancer and you see someone out there and supporting you, that can make such a difference."
Parliament says it is not just the Pink Ribbons this month, they also have some events set up.
"Marwood is doing in Tillsonburg and Woodstock some Pink t-shirts, they are selling them at both locations and those funds are going to the Cancer society as well. There is all different ways to get involved, it can be from a lemonade stand to t-shirt sales and anything in between. Raising those funds and making that research possible is making a difference. For the first time since 1986, we have almost cut the death rate in half."
Parliament adds one thing they really want to encourage is for women to get tested.
"Getting to know your body is so important, something as simple as a shower check and when anything is wrong, calling your doctor and going to those ever important screenings, because it is so much easier to treat, if it is caught early."
