Environment Canada accidentally issued a Tornado Warning this morning while it was testing it's backup server ahead of the summer weather season.
OXFORD COUNTY - Environment Canada issued a Tornado Warning for Oxford County and the surrounding area by mistake this morning.
Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says it was caused by a technical error.
"They were doing some testing on a backup server as we start to enter the summer weather season, but unfortunately the backup server was also hooked into a live server as well so some of those test messages did get out onto the circuit."
The test has since been called off and there will be an investigation into the matter.
The warning was sent out just before 8:40 a.m. but it was cancelled minutes later. In the event of a real tornado, Coulson says Environment Canada will try to issue a Tornado Watch before a Tornado Warning if possible.
"If they see something developing the Tornado Watch would go out to say there is potential and the Tornado Warning would follow if the potential realized. But there can be cases during the summer where these storms explode so quickly that they may decide to go right to a Tornado Warning."
Coulson says there is nothing concerning on the weather radar for the foreseeable future. We may experience some non-severe thunderstorms tonight along with some rain over the next couple of days.
