The transition to long-term care gets a little easier at TDMH as a new unit helps patients waiting for discharge.

TILLSONBURG - Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital is helping in long-term care.

There is a new unit that opened April 1st and is called the Transitional Care Unit, which is meant for an Alternate Level of Care to Long Term Care. Vice President of Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive, April Mullen shares some details about the unit.

"The unit is 12 beds, and it's supported with the right care providers. So, there's nursing, physiotherapy, physiotherapy assistance, and recreational therapy to support our patients' needs and more of a home-like setting."

Mullen said her and her team came up with the idea and proposed it to Ontario Health, and was supported with one time funding. She adds it will be open until March of next year and reassessed. Mullen mentions there has been positives coming from the unit.

"A lot of the discharge destinations have actually altered as a result of the restorative care elements. So, we've had patients that were candidates for long-term care that we've now been able to say, actually, you would do quite well in a retirement residence."

TCU patients reside in rooms set up to feel at home, with access to common spaces for socialization. You can find out more about the unit by visiting or calling TDMH.
