They're breaking new ground in Tavistock. The first phase of the $1-million Queen's Park renovation got underway today with an official groundbreaking. Crews have already been on site excavating this week to make way for a new pavilion. Jane Bender with the organizing committee says it's actually much more than a pavilion. "That's a bit of a misconception when you say 'pavilion'...it's much more, it's a multi-use facility and the sky is the limit for what we can do here. There's going to be room for sports training of any sort...picnics of course, family reunions, the Tavistock Fall Fair, the Step & Fiddle, you name it, we can do it." The new pavilion will include a multi-use sports area, washrooms, a picnic area, storage and will connect to walking trails. The project also got a financial boost today with a $150,000 Trillium Grant. The community is working towards raising $600,000 of their own, and the township has committed $400,000. Sheila Simpson, Program Manager with the Trillium Foundation explains why the project was chosen for funding. "That made it attractive, it really was within the context of a bigger plan. And also, there's so much community support, they've already raised a tremendous amount of money towards the project." East-Zorra-Tavistock Mayor Don McKay says the new pavilion will help attract more young families and seniors to Tavistock. He hopes it will also help the community grow together. "So if we get people out walking, and activities formal and informal, they have a better chance to actually know their neighbour and care about them and that always enhances the strength of a community identity."
