Woodstock Councillor Sandra Talbot's Facebook profile has been copied by imposters
WOODSTOCK – Woodstock Councillor Sandra Talbot is speaking out about a "frightening," scam that uses her likeness.
Talbot says con-artists have copied her photo and profile information from her two Facebook pages and are pretending to be her through a fake account.
"It's very frightening to think that someone can just do that and there is no ability or way to stop them," Talbot said, adding that Facebook has been of no assistance to her.
"You can put in reports saying you've been hacked but you never hear back from them and they never do anything," she said following Thursday night's City of Woodstock council meeting.
Talbot has deactivated her Facebook pages and didn't use its chat and messaging features. If it appears she recently contacted you using the social media site – it was not her, she said.
Talbot said the fraudsters are "relentless," in their attempts to cheat her Facebook friends.
"They tell you about this 'Mr. Zucherman, this wonderful deal he did, they got $90,000 delivered to their door by UPS' and it's a scam," she said.
"I bet you I get 50 messages a day saying 'Sandra, did you talk to me for 15 minutes last night?' No."
In addition to alerting Facebook to the imposters, she has also involved Woodstock Police and is working with their e-crimes unit.
Talbot meanwhile, cautions Facebook users to increase their security settings and to change their passwords often.
