Oxford Coalition for Social Justice holding picket at Tillsonburg Hospital
TILLSONBURG - Members of the Oxford Coalition for Social Justice will be out with an information picket today to show their sympathies to staff and patients of rural hospitals.
Brian Smith says their focus today will be Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital.
"They have cut eye surgeries from that hospital so if you need an eye surgery you need to leave your community to get it done. That cause a whole bunch of problems and it causes an expense for people and it frankly is unfair to seniors and it is unfair to the people who are caregivers to seniors."
"We think that the Minister of Health really has forgotten about what makes communities healthy and what makes individuals healthy and that's keeping the services in the local hospitals."
Brian Smith says local residents need to realize their voice can count with the Minister of Health.
"We will provide them a way that they can actually send a post card that reads a bit like a referendum that says 'Restore the Services to Hospitals' because this is part of a process that's been happening where services have been cut and cut and cut from hospitals -- rural ones in particular, but all across Ontario and we want the new Minister of Health to realize he has a responsibility."
Smith says it's Dr Eric Hoskins' job to make sure people have access to health services when and where they need them.
The picket runs from 4-5pm this afternoon.
Smith says no one will be blocked from entering or exiting the hospital.
