SWPH Provide Tips On Community Gardens During COVID-19

Southwestern Public Health says to wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before and after you use common tools, as well as maintaining a physical distance of two metres between yourself and other gardeners at all times. 

OXFORD COUNTY - Southwestern Public Health says community gardens play an important role in our food system. 

They released a new guidance document last week for those who own, operate or use community gardens to protect the health and safety of the community during COVID-19. 

They say to wash your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before and after you use common tools before and after you garden. 

Also, to bring your own garden tools and sanitize them after you use them, and wash your gloves after each time you wear them. 

Other tips include: 

- Follow the garden schedule and do not attend a garden when it is not your scheduled time. 

- Maintain a physical distance of two metres between yourself and other gardeners at all times. 

- Wash all produce before consumption according to safe food handling requirements. 

- Avoid touching your nose, eyes and face. 

- Avoid touching surfaces such as gates and doorknobs unless it is necessary. 

- Do not attend a garden if you're sick 

- Do not bring pets with you to the garden. 

Last month, the provincial government allowed allotment gardens and community gardens to be used across Ontario as it was as an essential food source for some individuals and families.
