County Council has agreed to authorize $2 million dollars towards the multi residential development of County owned property located at 1235 Nellis Street in an effort to increase affordable housing in Oxford County.
WOODSTOCK - More affordable housing will soon be available on Nellis Street in Woodstock.
Oxford County Council has authorized staff to look into a request for proposal to hopefully get some tenders for the surplus land. Warden Larry Martin says they want to bring in more affordable housing.
"Because we all know that, the biggest, number one problem throughout the entire province is housing, everybody is facing the same thing, so anything we can do to increase the housing and make it more affordable for our residents, is a good thing."
Martin says right now the County is leasing the land to Hydro One.
"Right now it is a hydro station. Hydro One leases it from Oxford County and we are not going to renew the lease. Hopefully we can go with a request for tender, pricing and someone will come in and somebody will come in and put in some affordable housing and social housing in there, like a mixture."
Martin did note, it could take awhile before any shovels hit the ground, but this is a good start.
"It is the first step on this piece of property to allow housing to go in there and replace what is in there now. We still have a little bit to yet, but any little bit we can do will help."
County Council has agreed to authorize $2 million dollars towards the multi residential development of County owned property located at 1235 Nellis Street. Woodstock will be funded with $490,300 Year 6 Investment in Affordable Housing – Extension funding; $754,900 Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative funding; and $754,800 from the County’s housing reserve.
