The Oxford County Animal Rescue says pet owners should use common sense this time of the year.
OXFORD COUNTY - The warmer weather is here and it means to look out for your pets.
When the temperatures get too hot, a car can easily turn into a sauna in a split second, which isn't good for pets. If you're thinking about leaving a pet unattended in a car, the Oxford County Animal Rescue's Director, Anna Holmes says you should use common sense.
"It's just not worth your animal's life to run into Canadian Tire to browse. A lot of the stores are dog friendly and will allow you to bring your dog's inside and so I mean, sure, yeah, bring them inside."
If you wouldn't leave yourself in a car with the windows rolled up in hot weather, Holmes says you shouldn't do that to your pets. She adds you should also be cautious when you take your pet outside on a hot day.
"It doesn't take long for a dog to get heat stroke when they're over exerted. So, if you like to ride your bike with your dog running beside you, please don't do that when it's hot."
If you are going to have your pets outside in the heat, make sure they have plenty of water and their bowl is always full.
You should also be wary of hot sidewalks around this time of the year. If its too hot for you to stand on the sidewalk with bare feet, it's too hot for for a dogs paws.
