Over 90 students from the Thames Valley District School Board participated in a Skills Competition at Fanshawe College in London.
LONDON - Students from the TVDSB tested their abilities at a Skills Competition at Fanshawe College.
Over 90 students took part in the challenge with 11 separate competitions in areas like photography, public safety, and there were even some small engines being worked on.
Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Coordinator Mark Brotherston says kids worked hard in a variety of tasks to test their skills and gain some hands on experience.
"Most of them involve skilled trades, technological skills: welding, precision machining, there were two kinds of carpentry, cabinet making. But there were other kinds of skills such as TV-Video."
Brotherston says they take this competition seriously, and you can feel the amount of dedication in the room.
"During the competition - and I've been doing this for a number of years - you can see the intensity on their face, they're concentrating in what they're doing, and doing their best. I'm sure they're having fun but it's like anything - when it comes time to pay attention, they were definitely doing that."
When it comes to the skilled trades, Brotherston says its important that students understand what it means to work in a skilled trade field, and that people need to start considering these as viable career options.
"There's a need for people with these skills. For years and years we've been concentrating on University education. I think just recently we're starting to pay attention to the skilled trades because we've created a deficit. Not only is there opportunity, but there's opportunity for great paying jobs."
