Local high school students will be climbing 1000 steps to support the United Way
WOODSTOCK - Hundreds of students from all over Oxford County are participating in the Student Stair Climb for the local United Way this year.
Kids from all six high schools in Oxford will be participating in the fundraising initiative on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at the Woodstock and District Community Complex. Campaign Coordinator Amanda Kreiger tells Heart FM it will be quite the show on Thursday.
"About 800 students participate every year - so they all come to the complex, they are all dressed up and it is school spirit to the max, their faces are painted, they are in costumes, the school mascots are there, and it is an amazing experience especially if you have never experienced before. We start out by playing some games on the ice and then get everyone organized to climb and then we climb the stairs. We climb the stairs at the complex twice and it is over 1000 steps and then we crown the stair climbing champion; so the school that raises the most funds is the champion and holds onto the trophy until next year."
Kreiger says all of the funds raised on Thursday will go towards United Way's fundraising campaign.
"Our fundraising goal is $1.2 million this year and our campaign is coming along really well, we have a lot of workplace campaigns that are currently underway right now, so in the next couple of weeks we will have a good idea as to where we are at towards reaching that goal."
