Following the trail of cheese. That's what Oxford County officials are hoping locals and tourists are doing this summer. The Cheese Trail launched last night with a celebration at the Elm Hurst Inn, which is one of the stops on the trail, and really where Oxford's cheesy heritage began. It was home to James Harris, who was the first cheese maker in all of Upper Canada. At one time, there were 98 cheese makers in Oxford County. Now, there's only a handful, but Tourism Specialist Cathy Bingham says it's coming back. "We're starting to see a resurgence of artisan cheese makers in the county. So we decided, let's do a cheese trail, and tie in a couple of days worth of fun things to do, some of them directly related to cheese, and some of them indirectly." There are 14 stops on the cheese trail. And Bingham says news is already spreading, and they've been fielding calls from across the country from people inquiring about it. "The Cheese Trail has been an instant success. We've received inquiries from right across Canada from people wanting a copy of The Cheese Trail, and want to include it in their vacation plans this summer. So we see this as growing, and growing." You can pick up your cheese trail map at the tourism kiosk at the Quality Hotel & Suites. Stops on the Cheese Trail: 1. Gunn?s Hill Artisan Cheese Ltd. 2. Just-A-Few-Fotos 3.
