Toyota outpaces GM and Volkswagon in first quarter auto sales.
More encouraging news for Woodstock's auto-sector, Toyota Motor Corp. said Wednesday that it sold a record 2.58-million vehicles in the January-March period, putting the Japanese automaker ahead of General Motors and Volkswagen in global auto sales through the first quarter.
Toyota's first quarter sales profits rising more than 6 percent from the same period the previous year.
GM's sales were also strong, improving by 2 percent over the same period.
Toyota has set an ambitious global sales target for 2014, targeting sales of more than 10-million vehicles for this year. No automaker has ever sold that many vehicles in one year.
Surprisingly, Toyota officials say being number one in sales is not that important -- rather they're aiming to be recognized as number one in customer satisfaction.
Toyota finished first last year with a record 9.98 million vehicles in sales, remaining the top-selling automaker for a second year in a row. General Motors finished second and Volkwagon third.
General Motors had been the number one selling automaker for more than seven decades before losing the title to Toyota in 2008. GM's image took a hit after a February recall of 2.6 million vehicles for defective ignition switches, a defect the company later tied to 13 deaths.
