Rivers and Streams in Oxford County are rising and are very dangerous right now.
After a week of heavy rain and snow the rivers and streams in Oxford County are rising and can be very dangerous.
The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is reminding everyone to stay away from all of the local waterways this time of year. Communications Specialist Eleanor Heagy tells Heart FM they really want to hammer this message home to parents and pet owners.
"It is really dangerous right now because the water is really fast flowing, it is really, really cold and it's muddy, it's slippery and it wouldn't take much to get somebody into trouble and we really need to keep an eye on our kids and our pets to make sure they stay away from watercourses."
Heagy says the rivers and streams are rising in the area and we will have some minor flooding in low lying areas. The water is moving very fast right now and is still extremely cold.
"We have had a lot of rain in the past two weeks the ground is quite saturated and then yesterday we got quite a bit of rain, depending on where you live we got between 15 to 35 mm of rain. Because the ground is saturated that water is not soaking into the ground, it is running off and it is going into the streams and rivers and so they are responding and they are rising."
