The Woodstock Fire department says during Thanksgiving they get a lot of calls.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Woodstock Fire Department say they usually see a spike in calls over the Thanksgiving weekend.
Public Information Coordinator Lisa Woods says it's important for people to remember to look while you cook, always be prepared in the event of a fire and of course have working smoke alarms.
But for those looking at deep frying their bird this weekend, Woods reminds residents to cook outdoors, away from combustible materials and read the owners manual. "There are manufacture's instructions when you're using these deep fryers and they do say that the turkey needs to be completely thawed so make sure you pay attention to those cooking tips that come with actual deep fryer. Make sure it's in a safe environment and make sure that you're paying attention to what you're doing."
Woods suggests a safe zone of four metres around the deep fryer and also warns of the potential for grease splashing while putting the turkey in and taking it out of the fryer. She also cautions if it is raining, the grease may splash.
Coming off of Fire Prevention Week, Woods reminds residents to be prepared in the event of a fire. "Make sure you have a pot lid or a cookie sheet handy so that you can slid it across than turn off the heat; never put water on a great fire obviously, it will make it explode. Be very cautious when you're using it, stay in the area when you're using grease especially. We say that about any kitchen appliance that you're using, look while you cook, stay in the kitchen. That's your best defence against something bad happening."
