Soybean Continues Upward Trend

Soybeans continue to be a popular crop for farmers across Ontario. In Oxford there is almost an even split between corn and soybeans.

Soybeans have become a popular crop for many farmers across the Province and in Oxford County. 

Provincial Soybean Specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs Horst Bohner says the main reason farmers are turning to soybeans is the cost is low to grow the crop and the worldwide demand for soybeans is incredible. Over the past three years soybeans have taken over as the number one crop in Ontario with 3.25 million acres planted this year compared to corn at over 2 million acres. 

However Bohner says, "That trend is not necessarily true in Oxford where it is more of an even split between corn and soybeans. Part of that is the livestock sector that drives that for feed. So there is a lot of corn for sure in Oxford - and don't get me wrong as an agronomist we want to see lots of crops in the rotation. It helps to reduce the number of insects and pests."
