City Council looking at the costs in purchasing a sixth sidewalk clearing machine.
WOODSTOCK - The topic of snow covered sidewalks was discussed in council chambers once again Thursday night.
Council debated who should be responsible for clearing sidewalks within city limits after councillor Jerry Acchione stated he received numerous complaints from the public about snow covered walkways. Acchione says solving the problem is simple. "If you have a sidewalk try to shovel it. I realize there is going to be difficulties...elderly, disabled, and everything else so I put this forward and hope that we can come to a resolution see what costs are involved if we do take it on as a city we will go from there."
City Engineer Harold de Haan highlighted that Woodstock currently has five sidewalk cleaners and the cost of purchasing a new machine to assist in the clearing is approximately $170,000. He further noted the struggles the crew face in trying to clean every walkway within the city limits.
Council is set to look into purchasing a new sidewalk clearing machine but as Acchione points out, if you want it done you are going to have to pay for it.
