Woodstock Hydro want their customers to know their smart meters are not linked to issues out west.
WOODSTOCK -- The Sensus smart meter linked to recent fires at Saskatchewan homes are not the same meters used in Ontario.
According to the province's electricity regulator, the 36 of 77 Ontario utilities that use Sensus are not using the Generation 3.3 model that was used out west.
Woodstock Hydro Manager of Operations, Jay Heaman says in the Friendly City, they've installed the Elster meters which have proven to work in their's and the customer's advantage. "We've been able to proactively identify some of these failed meters long before customers call and the way we do that is, the meters sense failed voltage; power failure sends a signal back to our office and then we're able to send a crew out, identify what the problem is and change that meter -- correct the problem long before any failure happens."
Even with the pending Woodstock Hydro to Hydro One sale, Heaman says there is predicted change of meters. "Hydro One uses Trilliant smart meters. To the best of our knowledge, there hasn't been any failure in those meters either. That sale of Woodstock Hydro to Hydro One isn't likely to initiate any smart meter changes right away, they'll probably continue on with the same technology."
Smart meters record a property's consumption of electric energy in small intervals and can relay that information electronically to the power company. This can eliminate the need for estimate bills when a meter reader is not able to check on site.
