It was created to celebrate the critical role of small businesses in a community. Today is the first ever Small Business Saturday and that means many local firms will have on special discounts and deals. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business and Interac Canada launched the campaign. "I think it's just another avenue for small businesses to get their name out there. They can promote something and hopefully if this goes well I believe there will be more Small Business Saturdays," said Christine Smith, a local Small Business Advisor. Many local small businesses are participating. "We do have some new local businesses that have opened up, so it'd be nice for local people to come out and see what they are. So even if you don't go online, come downtown and see what people are promoting today," said Smith. Local participating businesses can be found at www.shopsmallbiz.ca
