Security Increase to Ontario Legislature

MPP for Oxford Ernie Hardeman discusses the enhancements to security at the Legislature.

TORONTO - Visitors heading to the Ontario Legislature will experience heightened security effective immediately.  MPP for Oxford County Ernie Hardeman explains the reasoning behind the increase in safety. "When we had the breach of security on Parliament Hill the Speaker of the House set up a committee to look at to make sure we had enough security at Queens Park.  The first phase of it would be more vigilant as people are coming in and out of the building, this is one that has been done immediately and provide more security."    

Following the attack on Parliament Hill last October the Legislature in Toronto is beefing up security to ensure a safe environment to all visitors.  Hardeman discusses the new changes.  "At our doors presently we don't have metal detectors or anything.  The scrutiny is going to make sure that the people coming in and out of the building will have passes, others will have to have photo ID, and for whatever reason they are coming in the security can make sure that is appropriate."  
 
Hardeman does not want this to deter you from enjoying the Legislature, just that you will have to follow protocol before entering. "If someone wanted to come to Queen's Park they could call our office and we would arrange with security and when they arrived we could verified that who we said was coming was at the door.  There is more scrutiny when people have not made arrangements ahead then the security has the obligation to check who they are, and why they are there." Hardeman is pleased with the security increase and hopes that even more will be implemented soon.
