A London man is charged after a passenger in his car, under the age of 16, is not wearing a seat belt.
SOUTH-WEST OXFORD -- Oxford OPP want motorists to make sure children are always buckled up after an incident over the weekend.
OPP received complaints of a speeding vehicle Saturday afternoon shortly before 2:30 pm. Police observed the vehicle travelling east on Foldens Line in South-West Oxford and stopped the driver.
A brief investigation led to a 'Driving while passenger under 16 fails to properly wear seat belt' charge against 30 year-old Osama Alrehaili of London.
In a release from the OPP, police remind the motoring public to ensure all the passengers in vehicles are buckled up appropriately. All passengers under the age of 16 are the responsibility of the driver. All children under 8 years of age, less than 40 pounds, or less than 4’9” are required to be in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat. For the safety of your children follow the instructions for your car seat and read your vehicle owner’s manual to ensure that it is installed correctly and fitting the child correctly.
In the event of a collision, an unbuckled passenger in the back seat becomes a human projectile within the vehicle, posing an additional risk to occupants in the vehicle – even those who are wearing seat belts.
A few quick facts from the OPP:
·Seat belts are the single most effective traffic safety device for preventing death and injury.
·Wearing your seat belt properly will dramatically increase your chance of surviving a motor vehicle collision.
·Since seat belts were made mandatory, the number of people killed and injured in collisions within OPP jurisdiction has steadily dropped. This year’s seat belt-related fatalities currently sit at 38 (as of October 12, 2014).
